*For the next few weeks, students in my Reading blocks will be reading a Fact book on a specific topic.  We'll read a Fiction book on the same topic in January as part of a Fact vs Fiction unit.  These books are to remain at school since we have limited copies and some students are already partnering up to read.  If your child is absent, I will do my best to make sure they have access to the text they missed but this may require them coming in before school to catch up.

*For Writing, we will be working on a Biography Research Paper.  Students will have a lot of time in class to work on this but may want to do some editing at home once they get the main information collected.  These books also need to remain at school since I am having to share the copies with both of my blocks of students.

*Mark your calendars for Thursday Dec. 15.  Fifth grade will be having our Auction from 9-11 am.  I am looking for a parent who would like to be our auctioneer for this event as well as a couple of parents to help count and cash out coupons once students won an item.  We will follow this event up with a Winter Celebration from 11-12.  Be on the look out for more information and ways to help with this event.  Parents are welcome to come and help but know that we will not be performing anything.

You may want to go ahead and print off the SS ch 6 study guide.  We will be starting this on Monday.  I will provide copies on Monday to those who have notified me that they are unable to print.  The Notes answer key will be in their Google Classroom account on Monday.

We will be having an Auction in December.  This is a time for the students to "spend" or "bid on items" with the coupons they have earned so far this year.  We will be sending home more information about this early in December but we do need parent support to have items for the kids to bid on.  If you are able to pick up some items (small, medium, or big) over the Thanksgiving Break it would be greatly appreciated.  Items can range from puzzle books, to chips and soda, to movie passes.  Think about what your child would want to bid on!

Report Cards & Tuesday Folders

Report Cards are coming home today in your child's Tuesday folder.  You may keep all of the papers in the Report Card envelope (the actual report card, iReady reports, and any certificates).  Please sign and return the envelope as soon as possible.  Your child will get 100 bonus coupons if the envelope is signed and returned by Thursday of this week.  PLEASE make sure that ALL of the student work papers in the Tuesday Folder are reviewed and RETURNED.

If you haven't already done so, please make sure you are signing your child's agenda over the weekend.  I pay them coupons on Tuesdays but only if it has been signed.  I will back pay up to 3 weeks for late signatures but after than the coupons are forfeited.  It is ultimately your child's responsibility to bring the agenda to you to be signed, not your job to go searching for it.  I also check Reading Logs on Tuesdays (the calendar at the front of the agenda - I'm looking for 80 mins read, title of the book, and parent signature.  One night of reading can be traded out with time on iReady reading.).

Oct. 21 - Nov. 4

Monday - students DO have school
Tuesday - Reading Logs, SS ch 4 test for Mrs. Ellison's homeroom
Wednesday -
Thursday - Spelling Sort and Definition Quiz
Friday - Math Enrichment Project due

We are starting a new Science Unit about Heat Energy Transfer.  Please make sure your child has a copy of the Study Guide in their Science Journal as soon as possible.

SS ch 5 will start this week.  It will be VERY important that students have this study guide in their journals.  There is A LOT of information about 8 explorers in this chapter.  This test will be open notes but this only helps if they have AND know where the information is in their journals.

**If you are unable to print the study guides at home, please let me know and I will get copies for your child.  Please email me or write a note to let me know if this is the case.

** We have started a Independent Reading competition at school.  Students are tracking their INDEPENDENT reading in class (not at home).  When they reach certain benchmarks, they get to move their person to the next milestone marker.  Most students have already met the Mile Run (100 minutes) and several have completed the 5K (310 minutes).  Be sure to ask your child how they are doing and have them show you their certificate if they've met a benchmark.  The further along they go, the harder the benchmarks are but it gets them working towards a goal.  The triathlon requires them to pass 5 Close Reading passages in iReady so they may be asking to spend some time on this at home.  Please encourage it!  This is meant to be a self motivating competition, but several students are striving to keep up with classmates so some peer competition is welcome too.

If you are on Twitter, I've set up an account and you are welcome to follow me @kellison3443.  I'm still learning how to tweet and use hashtags (they're still pound/number signs to me) so be patient with me if you are a fluent tweeter.

October 24-28

Monday -
Tuesday - Reading Logs
Wednesday - Math division Quiz
Thursday - Spelling Sort and Definition Quiz; Mrs. Ellison's HR - Science Matter Unit Test (The Science study guide looks like a lot of material but it is just reexplaining the experiments that we've already done and learned about in class. I told my students to read over and THINK about the concepts each night to help them build their understanding. Do not try to memorize it all the night before the test! Powerpoints for our notes can be found in their Google Classroom.)
Friday - Math Order of Operations Quiz; Mrs. Askew's HR - Science Matter Unit Test

We do have school have on Monday Oct. 31 (Halloween).  We will NOT be dressing up during school hours.  Please limit the amount of candy that comes in to school for snacks and lunches.

Students should have their SS ch 4 study guide in their notebooks.  The target test day for Mrs. Ellison's homeroom is Tuesday Nov. 1.  Mrs. Askew's homeroom is probably going to be the following day.

Information about Make-Up Days/Times:
Traditional Calendar
  • Adding 10 minutes to the instructional day effective October 24, 2016
  • October 18, 2016, now a full day since we will operate on a 2 hour delay
  • October 31, 2016, now a regular student day
This means that our dismissal times will be backed up by 10 minutes each day, starting Monday October 24.  Fifth grade will be using this time for students to read independently (ask them about our competition) and will allow us time to work with students individually if they need help with specific skills or concepts.

Monday, October 17, 2016

Oct. 18-21

I hope everyone made it through Hurricane Matthew's flooding without too much difficulty.  I am sure everyone is ready to get back to normal.  Tuesday will be a 2 hr Delay INSTEAD of a 2 hr Early Release.  School will begin letting students in at 10:20 am (students are tardy if they arrive in the classroom after 10:50) and we will dismiss at normal time.  Changes to the school day will be shared with parents after the School Board makes a final approval of the plan for the Make Up days.

*No Spelling Sort or Definition Quiz this week.  I want to make sure the internet is back up and is
consistent and reliable before assigning one.

* The Boosterthon's Fun Run has been rescheduled for later in November.  More information will be sent home once new dates are finalized.

Tuesday: 2 hr delay
Wednesday: Spirit Night at Char Grill (this could change - be on the look out for more information)

Thank You to all of the parents who joined the PTA!

Progress Reports and Open House

Progress Reports went home today.  Please be sure to sign and return the slip of paper attached to them so that your child can earn some bonus coupons!

Remember that Open House is Thursday night.  PTA will have a brief general membership mtg in the cafeteria at 5:45 pm and then you can have your child show you around their classrooms between 6-7 pm.  This is a great opportunity to clarify any questions you have about Google Classroom or other procedures.  We have several fun activities planned for your child to share with you.  We hope to see you then.

If you haven't joined the PTA yet, please do so this week.  Classes that reach 90% participation by Friday Sept 30 will receive a $50 gift card from our PTA for us to purchase supplies for the class.  Your $6 really helps! PTA membership forms can be printed from the PTA website.

Permission slips and the first payment of $20 is due this Friday.  We need to have a final headcount and make our payment to the Old Salem Museum next week.

A few more items

Spelling - I have posted a sample spelling sort and quiz in Google Classroom.  Students may access this at home to practice with this format to see what the sort process and quiz format is like.  I encourage parents to have their child show you this at home.  I will generally post the sort on Mondays and have it due on Wednesdays.  Students may work on this in class and at home.  The quiz will generally be posted on Thursdays and needs to be completed IN CLASS.  Since we do not have a chromebook cart to stay in our classroom yet (some other grades are still using the carts to complete iReady testing) I will postpone starting Spelling one more week.  Please have your child use this week to explore the Sample Sort! The sorts will count for 20 points and the definition quiz will be 10 points for a total of 30 possible points to go in the grade book.

Google Classroom - I have set up my classrooms in Google Classroom and am helping Mrs. Askew set her's up.  I have invited parents to use the Guardian Feature which is new to Google Classroom this year.  This should allow you to see daily or weekly reports about what has been posted in your child's "classroom" accounts.  I don't think you can actually access the assignment but you will know what's there and if it's late or not.  I showed my homeroom students where I've put resources and lessons for them to access for SS and Science in case they are absent or need to review any materials.  Mrs. Askew will be adding this soon too for her homeroom!  This way your child isn't falling behind (too much) if they are home sick for a day or two.

PTA - If you haven't joined the PTA yet, please do so.  You can find a membership form in the Back To School Items tab on my website or on the PTA Membership page.  Classes with at least 90% of our parents to join the PTA will receive a $50 gift card for classroom supplies.  That's $50 we won't have to ask for you to send in supplies for!  Your $6 can really help us out.  Thanks for your support.

Sept. 12-16

Coming up next week:
Monday: practice multiplication facts every night
Tuesday: Reading Logs
Wednesday:
Thursday: Mrs. Ellison's homeroom will have a SS ch 1 test (study guide)
Friday: Mrs. Askew's homeroom will have a SS ch 1 test

Aquarium Projects

Check out Mrs. Ellison's homeroom's  Beginning of the Year Aquarium Projects! (2 are missing because they are still a work in progress)  Students worked in groups to come up with which fish they would choose based on certain guidelines (length and cost).  They then had to actually "create" what the aquarium would look like, provide a chart to show that they were within their allotted length and cost, and write a letter to me explaining why they chose the fish that they chose.  Some fish had to be in schools of 4 or more, others didn't get along with certain other fish.  All of these factors had to be considered when making their decisions.
*Fun was had by all students during this learning activity.  No actual fish were harmed in the process of making these aquariums.*

The "Best Overall" award was voted on by the class.  It was a tough decision to make!

The "Trashy"  award went to the project with the best use of recycled items.

The "Sparkles" award went to the project with the best use of glitter and the most effective method of making the fish move (they were also the first group to come up with that idea).

The "Hooked" award goes to the project with the most fish hooks in it (they're hard to see on the background but they're drawn in there).

The "Adventurous" award went to the project with the most effective adventure scenery.

Tuesday Folders

Tuesday folders went home today!  Please look over any student work your child has in the front pocket and make sure it is returned in the folder on Wednesday.  You may keep the papers in the back of the folder (some may need to be filled out and returned IF your choose to participate).  ALL STUDENT WORK SHOULD BE RETURNED EACH WEEK and a parent/guardian should sign the sheet in the folder next to that week's date.  If you did not sign your child's agenda (next to the behavior coupon sticker) over the weekend please do so and remind your child to show it to their teacher.  Thanks!

Sept. 5-9

Items to make note of for next week (Sept. 5-9):
Monday: No School (Labor Day holiday)
Tuesday: Reading Logs and agendas need to be signed
Wednesday: 5th grade will be taking the Reading iReady diagnostic test
Thursday: 5th grade will be taking the Math iReady diagnostic test
Friday: PRIDE Friday (wear school colors or spirit wear to show your school pride)

I have sent out and posted the September flag patrol schedule.  Students only need to sign up once for the year.  If students would still like to sign up they may continue to do so.  I will check the sign up list before making the October schedule.  If you signed your child up, thank you for allowing your child to participate in this patriotic activity.

Reading Log expectations: Students should be reading at home for at least 80 minutes each week.  I have shown them where I want this recorded in their agendas (the monthly calendar section at the front).  They should be writing down the title of what they are reading and how long they read.  A parent/guardian needs to sign it once for the week (you may sign it nightly if you want).  Students will get a ticket for recording their 80 minutes by the time I check it on Tuesday and a bonus ticket if it is signed by a parent/guardian.

Please make sure your child is bringing a book to school each day (preferably a novel that they are working on reading both at home and at school).  We are working on improving our reading stamina and will spend some class time each week with just quiet focused reading.  For this reason, it is important that they already have a book they are interested in so they are not wasting time searching the book shelves for one to read.

We have had a GREAT first week of school.  I'll be posting some pictures of my homeroom's Aquarium Projects soon.  Students seem to have settled in well.  Next week, I will be a little stricter with taking coupons when students are talking in line or being disruptive in class. I will always give a verbal/visual warning but after that coupons will be taken for repeated infractions.  It hasn't been too much of a problem this week but I can tell that some students are "very comfortable" with their classmates and tend to be a little too social in class.

Journal Covers

Here are my examples of what I'm looking for on the Science and SS journal covers.  Be creative and use any items that your child thinks of when they hear "Science" or "Social Studies."  You can use photographs, stickers, drawings, printed clip art, comic strips, etc - just not anything that is puffy or sticks out.  This is so that the journals are meaningful and easy for the students to identify as their Science journal and their SS journal.  I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with!  Have fun with it!

1st day of school

WOW!  We all survived the first day of school.  I hope all of our students came home excited about being in fifth grade.  We spent a lot of time establishing procedures and reviewing expectations with our students.

A few things to make a note of:
1. Ask your child whether or not they want to participate in Flag Patrol.  I talked to both of my groups of students about this today and showed them where the application is on my website.  I'll be working on the September schedule soon so go ahead and sign up if they are interested.

2.  Reading Logs: I showed both of my groups of students exactly where I want them to record their independent home reading.  I expect them to read 80 mins a week (they can break it up however it works for them).  They need to record what they are reading and how long they read on the monthly calendar at the front of their agenda.  I would also like to see a parent signature/initials verifying that your child actually did the reading.  Students will be rewarded with "tickets" for meeting the 80 min goal each week and a bonus "ticket" if it is signed.  I will check these on Tuesday mornings each week.

3.  Science and SS Journals - I have asked my homeroom students (and I believe Mrs. Askew will be talking to her homeroom students about this too) to decorate the cover of their Science and SS journals.  I would like to see pictures, stickers, drawings, clip art, etc showing what they think about when they hear Science and Social Studies.  I would like the notebook covers to be decorated by Friday and then either I or a parent volunteer (anyone want to help?) will cover the notebooks with clear packing tape.

4.  Science HW - We reviewed some basic Science Lab safety rules in class today.  Students are supposed to review these with their parents and have a contract signed tonight.

5.  If you have not turned in your paperwork from Meet the Teacher night, please make sure it is turned in as soon as possible.  Please join the PTA if you are able.  If you need any of the forms, I have them all on my website in the Back to School Items section.

THANKS FOR A GREAT START TO A GREAT YEAR!

Welcome to 5th Grade with Mrs. Ellison!

This is my 21st year teaching, all in Johnston County.  Wow - time flies when you're having fun.  It's a good thing I love my job!  I am married with 2 teenage boys who are both attending Clayton High School this year.  I earned my undergraduate degree from UNC-Wilmington and my masters from East Carolina University.  I have taught all subjects in grades 1st, 2nd, and 5th.  Outside of school I keep active with teaching faith formation classes at St. Ann's Catholic Church, getting my kids to and from their sporting events, walking, and reading.  I recently completed my first Ramblin' Rose triathlon and hope to improve my time when I compete again next May.  I do this as a motivation for myself, not to try to win the race.  As you will quickly learn, I use a lot of technology in my classes to engage the students and manage their assignments.  Please make sure you follow this Blog to stay updated about what is going on in Fifth grade this year.  I'm looking forward to another great year at Powhatan!
